Spreading Cheer with Students this Season

This week officers and staff from the Atherton Police Department held the 5th annual “Shop with a Cop” at the Redwood City Target Store. "Shop with a Cop" is a community-oriented program that brings together law enforcement officers and children during the holiday season to foster positive relationships and create memorable experiences. The program typically involves police officers taking children on a shopping spree, where they can pick out gifts for themselves and their families.  The Atherton Police “Shop with a Cop” includes selected grade school kids from Encinal Elementary, Laurel Elementary, and Los Lomitas Elementary.  An additional holiday toy event is held for Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School students later in the month of December with gift contributions from the community.

The primary goals of the Shop with a Cop program include:

  • Community Engagement: Building positive relationships between law enforcement and the community, especially with children.
  • Positive Interaction: Providing an opportunity for police officers to interact with children in a friendly and non-threatening environment.
  • Holiday Spirit: Spreading holiday cheer by allowing children to experience the joy of giving and receiving gifts during the festive season.
  • Crisis Prevention: Creating positive interactions with law enforcement early on may contribute to building trust and preventing future issues.

Participating in a Shop with a Cop program not only provides tangible benefits for the children involved but also strengthens the bond between law enforcement and the community. It's a heartwarming initiative that embodies the spirit of giving and community support during the holiday season.

Get Calm with the Library

As much fun as the holidays can be, this time of year may also be stressful for some folks. Did you know the County offers the Calm app to select library card holders? Calm includes free guided meditations and soothing white noise. Visit https://smcl.org/get-calm/ or ask a staff member for help signing up.
