Heat Wave Tips

Cooling Centers:

Check out a list of cooling centers across San Mateo County, Cooling centers include the Atherton Library, Menlo Park Library, Woodside Library, and Portola Valley Library, among others. For a full list of centers click here.

Tips for dealing with extreme heat:

  • Avoid physical exterior or exercising outdoors.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing, hates, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid sugary, alcoholic, and very drinks.
  • Learn the signs of heat-related illness here.

Check on your neighbors:

  • Monitor those at higher risk of heat-related illness including infants and young children; people 65 years of age or older; individuals with chronic illness, disabilities or who are pregnant.
  • Assess your and others risk levels at heatreadyca.com

Pet Safety:

  • Never leave a pet in the car, even in the shade or with windows cracked. Cars can overheat quickly to deadly temperatures, even when the weather isn't severe.
  • Be aware of hot pavement when walking dogs.
  • Make sure your pets have unlimited access to fresh water, and access to shade when outside.
  • Don't walk, run or hike with a dog during the hottest parts of the day or on particularly warm days. Overweight pets and short-nosed dog breeds have a higher risk of problems with warm-weather exercise.
  • More tips from the American Veterinary Medical Association here.
