PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 19, 2025
The Town of Atherton is deeply saddened by the recent fatal collision involving a cyclist and a refuse service delivery vehicle that occurred along Middlefield Road at the intersection of Prior Lane. On behalf of the Town, the City Council and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual whose life was lost in this tragic incident. Our thoughts remain with all who have been affected during this difficult tragedy.
The Atherton Police Department is continuing its investigation of the collision and we ask the community to respect the sensitivity of this process. To preserve the integrity of the investigation, the Town cannot comment on the specific details of the incident until the investigation is completed.
The Town takes seriously multimodal transportation safety within our community. For example, Middlefield Road was recently upgraded with a Class II bicycle lane, featuring green striping, conflict zone treatments at intersections, and improved visibility markings designed to promote safer, more predictable interactions between motorists and cyclists.
In the aftermath of this incident, the Town is taking the following proactive measures to remind and reinforce bicycle and pedestrian safety:
- Increased enforcement of traffic safety laws along Middlefield Road and other key corridors;
- Distribution of bicycle and pedestrian safety materials to raise public awareness; and,
- Community workshops and educational events focused on safe cycling and walking practices.
The Town has also been actively working on a comprehensive update to the Town’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan and welcomes public input and engagement as part of that process.
The safety of our residents and all who travel through Atherton remains our highest priority and we recognize that this is a shared responsibility amongst everyone—cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists alike.
For additional information on upcoming safety events or to participate in the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan update, please visit the Town’s website at https://www.ci.atherton.ca.us/701/Active-Transportation-Plan.
