San Mateo County News & Information

Yellowjacket Awareness - Do's & Don'ts

San Mateo County wants to help you understand *where* and *how* to hang a yellowjacket trap.

Don't:

Hang the traps near where you are eating outdoors. The traps *attract* more yellowjackets to the immediate area.

Do:

Hang the traps on the edge of your property, or (in a large area) at least 200 feet away from where people are eating. Space them every 150 feet around the edge of the area.

Remember to change the lure/bait according to the package instructions - usually they have to be changed every few weeks to continue to work.

If you can't find a nest on your property, don't forget to tell your neighbors about our NO-COST yellowjacket treatment service! They can check their property for nests as well and reach out.

If you know where the nest is (usually in a hole in the ground), call us for NO-COST treatment.  We usually visit the next business day!  Call 650-344-8592 or submit a request online at https://www.smcmvcd.org/request-service
